Today, Thursday, Oct. 15, is the deadline for second-half real estate taxes in Crow Wing County — and if you bought or moved into a home in Brainerd, Baxter, Pequot Lakes, Nisswa, Crosslake or anywhere else in the county this year, there’s a second date to put on the calendar.
Second-half property taxes are due today
Crow Wing County lists Oct. 15 as the second-half due date for real estate taxes, and the Minnesota Department of Revenue’s property-tax calendar sets the same statewide deadline. Two exceptions, per both the county and the state:
- Agricultural land: if any part of the parcel is classified as class 2a agricultural, the second half is due Nov. 15.
- Manufactured (mobile) homes taxed as personal property: second half due Nov. 15.
If your taxes are paid through a mortgage escrow account, it’s still worth confirming the payment went through. Questions about your bill go to Crow Wing County.
New homeowners: file for homestead by Dec. 31
Homestead status is for a home you own and live in, and it isn’t automatic when you buy. Crow Wing County says owners who changed residences during the past year must both own and occupy the home by Dec. 31 and file a homestead application with the county assessor by Dec. 31. The Minnesota Department of Revenue’s calendar lists the same Dec. 31 deadline for moving in and filing for the current year’s assessment.
The county notes that you may need to show proof of ownership, and applications need signatures and Social Security numbers for occupants and their spouses. If you bought a lake place this year that you plan to live in year-round, ask the assessor how your property is classified.
